These complex systems, known as societal-scale cyber-physical systems, integrate physical infrastructure with thousands of sensors, computing devices, and actuators. Due to their scale and distributed nature, managing these systems in real time poses a significant challenge. To address this challenge, the project will leverage deep reinforcement learning, a form of artificial intelligence that learns optimal decision-making strategies directly from data. By improving the efficiency and reliability of critical infrastructure systems, the research will further the national interest through reducing traffic congestion, improving emergency response times, and increasing the stability of the power grid. This project will also develop a highly skilled science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) talent pipeline. These development activities will include creating interactive, game-based learning modules for K-12 students, developing an interdisciplinary graduate course on AI and cyber-physical systems, and providing training materials to help community partners effectively adopt artificial intelligence technologies.

This project will advance the foundations of sequential decision-making for societal-scale cyber-physical systems (CPS) by addressing the fundamental scalability and communication challenges faced by existing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approaches. The scope of the research will encompass theoretical and algorithmic innovations to develop a hierarchical and communication-aware DRL framework, which will be tailored to the vast state-action spaces and distributed nature of societal-scale CPS. First, the project will introduce a cyber-physical feudal reinforcement learning framework that will provide automated, data-driven system decomposition. This approach will partition a complex cyber-physical system into tractable subsystems based on their underlying dynamic cyber-physical couplings. The framework will then train a hierarchy of DRL policies to control the system: a high-level coordination policy will generate abstract but physically achievable goals for ensembles of decentralized, low-level subsystem policies. Second, to address the communication constraints of distributed CPS, the project will extend the feudal DRL framework to be communication-aware. To minimize bandwidth overhead, the framework will integrate physics-informed causal abstraction to compress state representations and trigger communication only when necessary. To handle communication disruptions and missing data, the framework will employ adversarial curriculum learning to train robust policies that will rely on belief states and learned intrinsic motivation to ensure graceful degradation. The project will evaluate the proposed innovations using high-fidelity simulations, real-world datasets from transportation and power systems, and community partnerships, rigorously demonstrating the intellectual contributions required to deploy scalable, data-driven control policies across critical distributed infrastructure.

Adversarial Reinforcement Learning for Detecting False Data Injection Attacks in Vehicular Routing

Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem with Prompt Confirmation of Advance Requests

MoveOD: Synthesizing Origin-Destination Commute Distribution from U.S. Census Data

Ensemble Prediction of Task Affinity for Efficient Multi-Task Learning

AI for Smart Transportation

An End-to-End Solution for Public Transit Stationing and Dispatch Problem

Fixed-Line Transit 2.0: Real-Time Optimization of High-Frequency Transit Service

This project will develop and deploy a real-time, AI-driven decision support system that makes high-frequency bus service more reliable by anticipating and proactively mitigating delays, overcrowding, and service disruptions. Frequent, high-ridership bus routes are inherently unstable: when a bus falls behind, it encounters more waiting passengers and falls even further behind, until buses bunch together and leave long gaps in service, causing longer and less predictable waits, overcrowding, and missed transfers. The project focuses on WeGo Public Transit’s Route 55 Murfreesboro in Nashville, Tennessee, WeGo’s busiest route with nearly 5,000 weekday boardings, but also its least reliable one: more than 1 in 4 buses are either bunched or gapped, adding up to over 105 hours of excess waiting time for passengers every weekday. The project is led by WeGo in partnership with the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure, the Pennsylvania State University, Vanderbilt University, and technology companies.

At the heart of the project is an Integrated Decision Support System that fuses heterogeneous real-time data, such as bus locations updated every two seconds, passenger counts, traffic, and weather. Computer vision will count passengers at bus stops and on buses, and machine learning models will forecast bus arrival times, headways, overcrowding, and service disruptions. Building on these forecasts, the system will warn dispatchers of emerging problems and use AI-driven optimization to recommend strategies that prevent them, such as holding or short-turning buses, skipping stops, or inserting standby buses. Adaptive traffic signal control with headway-conditional transit signal priority, continuously optimized using machine learning, will further reduce travel times and their variability, and riders will receive more accurate arrival predictions in their smartphone apps and on digital displays at bus stops.

Overview of the Fixed-Line Transit 2.0 system

Together with Vanderbilt University, our team at Penn State is responsible for the AI at the core of this system: prediction algorithms for bus arrivals and headways, and a real-time decision support system for dispatchers and drivers. We will create a decision-focused learning framework, in which prediction models trained on spatiotemporal data, such as weather, traffic, and ridership, are incorporated into non-myopic online optimization algorithms for proactive headway management and vehicle stationing. These algorithms will use the learned models to simulate uncertain future trajectories of the transit system and reason through them to improve service reliability. Our approach will combine these strengths of AI with the strengths of human supervisors, whose tacit knowledge and expertise are invaluable for understanding the dynamic challenges of fixed-line transit, while giving supervisors, drivers, and passengers real-time situational awareness of the whole system.

By making frequent bus service faster and more predictable, the project will improve access to jobs, education, and essential services: 65% of Route 55 riders do not have access to a vehicle, and since the route has more transfers to and from other routes than any other WeGo route, the benefits will extend to residents in many other parts of Nashville. More reliable transit may also draw people away from driving, and adaptive signals with transit signal priority will reduce delays at intersections, together reducing congestion and improving energy efficiency. The decision support system will also improve the productivity and job quality of dispatchers and drivers. Unlike dedicated transit lanes, whose construction is a multi-year, resource-intensive undertaking, the system builds on existing infrastructure, such as municipal fiber, onboard sensors, and real-time transit data feeds, greatly reducing the cost, duration, and risk of deployment. Extending it to six additional high-frequency WeGo routes would bring more than 2 in 3 WeGo bus boardings, nearly 20,000 rides per weekday, onto “Transit 2.0” routes, and the approach is relevant to other transit agencies facing similar challenges.

Scalable Decision-Making in Stochastic Environments through Learned Temporal Abstraction

AI-Powered Autonomy-Aware Neighborhood Mobility Zones

This project reimagines public transportation for mid-sized U.S. cities through an AI-driven, multi-modal mobility framework that integrates fixed-line buses and on-demand microtransit into a single, responsive system. Led by the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) with technical contribution from the Pennsylvania State University, Vanderbilt University, and Cornell University, this $7 million initiative is designed to enhance infrastructure utilization, mobility access, and financial viability of public transit in Chattanooga while providing a national model for AI-enabled mobility resilience.

At the project’s core is the concept of neighborhood mobility zones—virtual, data-driven operational areas that dynamically organize and optimize transportation resources without requiring costly new infrastructure. These zones centralize around Chattanooga’s downtown core, connecting neighborhoods, universities, hospitals, and economic centers. The system uses AI algorithms for real-time multi-modal routing, predictive demand modeling, and autonomy-aware fleet planning, ensuring that resources, human-driven and autonomous, are deployed where they are most effective.

Beyond technical innovation, the project establishes sustainable business models, such as subscription-based mobility packages and monetization of CARTA’s 4,200 parking spaces and other infrastructures, to ensure long-term economic viability.

By integrating multimodal mobility options, along with personal cars, the goal is to increase the overall trips served through the system by 5x. The project advances DOE’s Energy Efficient Mobility Systems (EEMS) objectives while aligning with the March 2025 Executive Order on “Achieving Efficiency Through State and Local Preparedness.” Overall it demonstrates how neurosymbolic AI and integrating autonomous technology with multimodal options can improve infrastructure reliability and effectiveness.

Rural Transit Solutions for Enhancing Access & Connectivity

This Civic Innovation Challenge (CIVIC) Stage 1 project will perform research to address transportation challenges faced by residents and workers in rural areas around industrial hubs. Rapid economic growth in these areas demands efficient public transit systems that can serve a geographically dispersed workforce with strict arrival times. However, existing solutions often struggle with these unique requirements, leading to traffic congestion, pollution, and limited access to essential services for residents. This research project will develop and deploy a novel multi-modal transit system for Blue Oval City (BOC), a new rural industrial hub in Stanton, Tennessee. The system will combine fixed-line buses with on-demand micro-transit services, addressing the challenges posed by the geographically dispersed workforce and strict arrival times. Further, the project will design equitable fare structures to ensure that the system is sustainable for all stakeholders. If successful, the research will benefit communities around BOC by enhancing their access to employment opportunities, essential resources, and services, ultimately improving quality of life and community resilience. Furthermore, developing efficient and reliable transit can promote the growth of businesses in the surrounding areas and offer more affordable living options. The research findings and deliverables will be transferable to other rural industrial hubs across the nation, fostering economic development and improving public transportation infrastructure.

This project will be led by a multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder team of researchers and civic partners to co-create a scalable pilot project for BOC. The research project has two main goals. (i) Develop a system to optimize multi-modal transit networks, including micro-transit services that act as feeders for large, fixed-line buses. Models based on artificial intelligence will be designed to handle high volumes of employee trips and create service zones with optimal pick-up and drop-off locations, guaranteeing on-time arrivals for workers regardless of their shift schedules. (ii) Explore sustainable funding plans through stakeholder engagement, designing a fare structure that incentivizes ridership and ensures social equity. This includes examining how the system can improve access to healthcare, education, and other essential services.

Grid-Aware Charging and Operational Optimization for Mixed-Fleet Public Transit

Deploying Mobility-On-Demand for All by Optimizing Paratransit Services

Acceptance Rate: 20%
In the Houston (Texas) area, over 14% of Harris County households experienced food insecurity before the emergence of COVID-19. It is unclear how the nutritional needs of Houston’s vulnerable populations will be served when the next devastating weather event strikes the region, given that the city is already experiencing multiple disasters, including COVID-19, economic disruptions, and systemic food insecurity. The Houston Food Bank (HFB) collaborates with over 1,500 partners to address the needs of families experiencing food insecurity. The COVID-19 pandemic has stretched funding and personnel significantly while driving substantial increases in demand. HFB has adapted to past natural disasters, such as hurricanes and floods, in an ad hoc manner and seeks to build disaster resilience by incorporating strategies beyond current practices. The urgent needs are to identify food-insecure communities, understand their nutritional needs during disasters, and provide nutritious and culturally appropriate food in a manner that preserves privacy and dignity. Left unaddressed, these issues may create failures in HFB’s ability to distribute food effectively, equitably, and efficiently.

Through a community-driven approach, this project brings together civic collaborators with university researchers to align HFB’s food distribution strategy to match food insecurity during multiple disaster profiles. Collaborators that have driven this approach include food pantries associated with HFB, local government, state government, other food banks, Foodbank Associations, workforce development and education, housing, health organizations, United Way, and YMCA. Leveraging lessons learned from six workshops conducted with HFB and its partners during our Stage 1 planning grant, we will jointly undertake a research-centered, socio-technical approach to develop and evaluate decision-making tools that incorporate equity indices for selecting food distribution hubs to improve the resilience of the food distribution network. Our project has the following objectives:

develop indicators of individual and community equity for food distribution during pandemics and extreme weather events;

design a network organizational resilience index for food bank networks and interventions to improve network resilience;

develop and validate a predictive tool for infrastructure vulnerability, and

develop and validate an artificial-intelligence based decision-making tool for determining the locations of food distribution hubs and their food allocation.

Our team is focused on turning research into action. The decision-making tools produced will be disseminated to other disaster-vulnerable food banks throughout the United States, supporting transferable applications of AI-based techniques for food distribution optimization.

The novelty of the project lies in a community-driven participatory approach that integrates both social and technical dimensions, bringing transformational change to EV ownership and electrification of smart public transportation. This will be achieved using a data-driven model that integrates real-time data from micro-transit, fixed-route transit, and carpooling services to predict and overcome the uncertainties of traffic conditions, which would result in uncertain travel times and poor reliability. An engaging process establishes collaborative relationships, and identifies adopter indicators and incentives for equitable EV ownership and transit ridership. The project will result in a templet and framework for implementing smart transit hubs, which can be reapplied as best practices at other facilities of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) or other transit systems.

Greater access to new electric mobility technologies requires reduction in economic barriers to EV ownership and transportation services. Communities need to proactively plan for transportation technologies to improve the lives of low-income communities while lowering emissions, increasing transit use, and reducing congestion. The intellectual merits include application of emerging data analytics, smart technologies, and machine learning to tackle a national challenge of equitable access to EV ownership and electric mobility. The project builds a model using artificial neural networks to capture complex, non-linear phenomena and parameterize data for real-time decision making. The broader project impacts include developing a digital ecosystem and incentive programs reflecting the national need to stimulate equitable access to EV ownership; regional policy impact demonstrating collaborative partnerships between cities, EV companies, fast charging developers, and ridesharing services; and research that opens up opportunities to use the data for EV impacts on the energy grid and future smart grid research. This project will identify how the deployment of smart technologies can improve the reliability, comfort, and affordability of transit services.

Transit-Gym: A Simulation and Evaluation Engine for Analysis of Bus Transit Systems

Efficient Data Management for Intelligent Urban Mobility Systems

A Review and Outlook on Energy Consumption Estimation Models for Electric Vehicles

Selfish Mining Attacks Exacerbated by Elastic Hash Supply

Acceptance Rate: 25%

Minimizing Energy Use of Mixed-Fleet Public Transit for Fixed-Route Service

Acceptance Rate: 21%

Data-Driven Decision Support for Optimizing Cyber Forensic Investigations

Impact Factor: 6.3

Safe and Private Forward-Trading Platform for Transactive Microgrids

The Role of Blockchains in Multi-Stakeholder Transactive Energy Systems

Adversarial Deep Reinforcement Learning based Adaptive Moving Target Defense

AI-Engine for Optimizing Mixed-Fleet Transit Operations

In every public transit system, a trade-off has to be made between concentrating service into very useful routes that serve large numbers of people and spreading service out to ensure that people everywhere have access to at least some service. Improving the efficiency of an existing system while enhancing service in terms of both usefulness and coverage presents considerable challenges. These challenges to operational efficiency are exacerbated by the requirement to provide complementary paratransit services, which are typically characterized by very low efficiency (energy per passenger per mile) and attendant high cost of operation. Our vision is to address these challenges by combining the complementary advantages of fixed- and dynamic-route transit services and seamlessly integrating them. We focus on the following objectives: minimizing energy used per passenger per mile, minimizing passenger wait and trip times, maximizing service coverage, and maximizing the percentage of daily trips serviced by transit. To explore this complex decision space, we will design, implement, and evaluate an artificial intelligence engine, which will enable agencies with mixed-vehicle fleets (EVs, ICEVs, etc.) to operate integrated fixed-dynamic transit services that maximize energy efficiency and make transit more accessible.

This project will bring together a team consisting of people with complementary background in transit operations, transit optimization, simulations, and artificial intelligence. This team will address the above challenges using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-driven optimization techniques. Deep reinforcement learning and Monte-Carlo tree search will form the core of our real-time operational optimization, which will be supported by data-driven optimization for offline planning and by machine learning techniques for predicting transit demand, maintenance requirements, and traffic conditions.

The success of transit optimization and increased ridership depend on the acceptance of the public. Therefore, we are going to develop a novel methodology based on social relational networks to maximize our community outreach. We will augment these methods by providing affordable and complete transit subscription packages and a guidance app leveraged by CARTA’s unique role in managing transit, parking, bike share, and EV car share to support integrated subscription-based access to multiple modes of transportation. To mitigate the risk of operationalization, we will leverage Siemens’ Railigent platform, which provides the capability to manage large-scale geo-spatial data in the cloud and to generate comparative analytics. This partnership also ensures that the software developed here will be of a high technical readiness level and will be provided with required maintenance support to other agencies that face similar problems.

The impact of this project will be immense. The project provides mechanisms to improve transit accessibility with a projected increase from 41% to 73% of residents within ¼ mile of frequent transit service which will reduce personal-vehicle trips taken by those residents, significantly decreasing the energy used for transportation at the city level. The project will also reduce the per passenger per mile energy use and operating costs of the public transit service through operational optimization.

A Privacy-preserving Mobile and Fog Computing Framework to Trace and Prevent COVID-19 Community Transmission

Impact Factor: 6.7

Blockchains for Transactive Energy Systems: Opportunities, Challenges, and Approaches

Data-Driven Prediction of Route-Level Energy Use for Mixed-Vehicle Transit Fleets

Equilibrium of Blockchain Miners with Dynamic Asset Allocation

Graph-Theoretic Approach for Increasing Participation in Networks with Assorted Resources

Impact Factor: 6.7

Vyper: A Security Comparison with Solidity Based on Common Vulnerabilities

Microtransit Solutions for Underserved Communities

Public transportation infrastructure is an essential component in cultivating equitable communities. However, public transit agencies have historically struggled to achieve this since they are often severely stressed in terms of resources as they have to make the trade-off between concentrating service into routes that serve large numbers of people and spreading service out to ensure that people everywhere have access to at least some service. A solution that holds great promise for improving public transit systems is the integration of fixed-route services with microtransit systems: multi-passenger transportation services that serve passengers using dynamically generated routes and may expect passengers to make their way to and from common pick-up or drop-off points. However, most microtransit systems have failed in the past due to the lack of community engagement, inability to handle the uncertainty of operations when integrating the fixed transit, and inability to handle the system-level optimization challenges.

This project takes a socio-relational approach to community engagement in collaboration with the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA), designs a community-centric micro-transit service that augments fixed-line public transit networks (improving transit accessibility), and demonstrate its effectiveness in the representative city of Chattanooga. The outcome of the project will be a deployment-ready software system that can be used by an agency to design and operate a micro-transit service effectively. The algorithmic toolchain will be complemented by mechanisms to optimally select the parameters and sustainably manage the data required by the algorithms. In addition, this project will provide a set of exemplar case studies and a validated social methodology to engage the community and learn their requirements, which will be fed into the algorithms. This will potentially impact a wide range of cities in the U.S. that do not have well-developed transit systems as the project will not only provide a reusable operations system but also demonstrate how integrated socio-technical research and strong community engagement can provide a pattern for sustainability and expansion.

The intellectual merit of this project lies in the novel community engagement approach and combined operations research and data-driven, learning-based integrated system optimization. Towards this goal, the project will make four key contributions.

First, the project will develop a novel targeted outreach approach that uses the relational networks of social capital (e.g., outreach to community centers, congregations and faith communities, schools, and similar organizational structures) and builds a categorical demand model to design an innovative micro-transit system. The project’s hypothesis is that the behavioral impact on public-transit ridership with the proposed method will be significantly higher than with an approach that focuses only on the economic or time-saving benefits of the improved transit system.

Second, the project will introduce a sustainable and resilient data-integration platform that dynamically adjusts the location of the sensor data used to affect the design parameters and assess performance of the transit system. This is crucial because cloud computing is still very expensive for community partners, especially for real-time high-velocity and high-volume data analysis. Further, this data store provides us an opportunity to take a privacy-by-design approach for the datasets collected during the project. Specifically, the project will develop novel integrated anonymization mixers for multi-modal datasets (e.g., mixing information of different modalities, such as location traces and transactions, together in a spatiotemporal-transactional mixer) that achieve a given level of privacy (quantified using the notation of differential privacy) while maximizing the accuracy of transit queries, relying on not just the privacy-properties of the data but also on the needs of the queries.

Third, the project will develop uncertainty-aware fleet management and dispatch algorithms that incorporate demand aggregation and environmental uncertainty caused by congestion, incidents, and their impact on the system (both for the users and fleet operations).

Fourth, the project will leverage recent advances in active learning for non-stationary environments with contextual side information to design algorithms that will aid in the exploration and optimal selection of hyperparameters for microtransit algorithms.

Agencies are struggling to maintain transit accessibility with reduced resources, changing ridership patterns, vehicle capacity constraints due to social distancing, and reduced services due to driver unavailability. A number of transit agencies have also begun to help the local food banks deliver food to shelters, which further strains the available resources if not planned optimally. At the same time, the lack of situational information is creating a challenge for riders who need to understand what seating is available on the vehicles to ensure sufficient distancing. In partnership with the transit agencies of Chattanooga, TN, and Nashville, TN, the proposed research will rapidly develop integrated transit operational optimization algorithms, which will provide proactive scheduling and allocation of vehicles to transit and cargo trips, considering exigent vehicle maintenance requirements (i.e., disinfection). A key component of the research is the design of privacy-preserving camera-based ridership detection methods that can help provide commuters with real-time information on available seats considering social-distancing constraints. The datasets and algorithms developed through this program will be swiftly released to the research community to encourage a wider collaborative effort that will help other transit agencies that face similar challenges.

The intellectual merit of the proposed research lies in the design and evaluation of integrated operational optimization for both fixed-line and on-demand transit (including paratransit) under atypical capacity constraints, which requires maximizing transit access but minimizing contact. The challenge for optimization is the uncertainties that arise due to the atypical travel time and travel demand distribution, both of which need to be learned online again due to the changed scenarios. While it is possible to optimize these transit modes separately as prior work has done, integrated optimization can lead to significantly better results. However, this is difficult as the solution space of these problems is very large. The approach is based on rapidly composing and comparing the effectiveness of principled decision-theoretic approaches such as Monte Carlo tree search, optimal trip assignments using integer programming and problem-specific heuristics, and demand aggregation for on-demand transit. To develop a model for varying travel demand, the research uses novel neural network architectures to estimate usage and seating patterns in real-time from cameras that are already installed within transit vehicles. This will enable transit agencies to obtain travel demand even when they are running fare-free operations to minimize contact with drivers. Working with partner transit agencies, the researchers will be able to make the services more accessible for the community during these challenging times. This project directly relates to Smart and Connected Communities program as it demonstrates the importance of the integration of technical and social research with strong community engagement in improving resilience of transit systems due to pandemics and other crises.

Cyber-Attacks and Mitigation in Blockchain Based Transactive Energy Systems

Blockchain Security and Applications

This project studies the following research topics:

(also known as vulnerability reward programs), which allow outside security experts to evaluate the security of an organization’s products and services and to report security vulnerabilities in exchange for rewards. Bug-bounty programs provide unique benefits by allowing organizations to publicly signal their commitment to security and to harness the diverse expertise of thousands of security experts in an affordable way. Despite their rapidly growing popularity, bug-bounty programs are not well understood and can be mismanaged. As a result, bug bounty programs can waste substantial resources and they rarely live up to their potential to improve cybersecurity. This project will significantly improve the efficiency of bug-bounty programs by collecting and publishing comprehensive datasets on the bug-bounty ecosystem, by establishing a sound theory of bug-bounty programs, and by providing practical recommendations for organizations and regulators. The project will directly benefit organizations and companies by enabling them to manage bug-bounty programs more efficiently, which will allow them to eliminate security vulnerabilities at a lower cost; and it will also benefit users by improving the security of software products and services.

This project comprises four research thrusts. The first thrust will build a dataset that captures the entire bug-bounty ecosystem by collecting activity data and rule descriptions from public bug-bounty programs, conducting interviews and focus-group studies with experts who regularly participate in programs, collecting social-media posts, and incorporating existing datasets, such as vulnerability databases. The second thrust will analyze this dataset to understand the ecosystem and its actors’ incentives and actions, and to characterize processes, such as discovering and reporting vulnerabilities and rewarding reports. To code textual data, the project will first develop a terminology and taxonomy of bug-bounty related concepts. Driven by the results of the data analysis, the third thrust will develop a formal model of the bug-bounty ecosystem, which will incorporate technological processes as well as behavioral and economic incentives. To capture all aspects of such a complex ecosystem, the project will employ models and techniques from multiple disciplines and areas, including economics and cybersecurity. Building on this model, the fourth thrust will propose and evaluate novel approaches for improving the efficiency and scalability of bug-bounty programs. The project will consider policies for individual bug-bounty programs, such as rules for rewarding vulnerability reports, as well as mechanisms for regulating bug-bounty programs and for instigating coordination between them.

VeriSolid: Correct-by-Design Smart Contracts for Ethereum

Acceptance Rate: 22%

Data-Driven Energy Optimization for Multi-Modal Transit

The goal of this project is to develop a high-resolution system-level data capture and analysis framework to revolutionize the operational planning of a regional transportation authority, specifically the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA). There is existing research on improving energy efficiency in transportation networks through analyzing energy consumption data per vehicle type and driving context. However, these studies are based on trip-specific estimation and thus cannot be applied to a regional transportation network. Further, a number of these studies are based on simplified model estimation that is used within a simulation framework for analysis and are therefore difficult to validate during actual driving/road conditions that are not captured in the training dataset (which is typically limited in size and features).

The availability of ubiquitous high-speed networking in Chattanooga provides us with a unique opportunity to change this status quo by providing mechanisms to significantly improve the operational efficiency of fleet operations. Specifically, we collect high-resolution datasets containing all information about engine status, vehicle location, fuel usage, etc. in real-time from CARTA’s fleet of buses, car sharing, and e-bike sharing vehicles and send them to a central station for analysis. Additionally, we get state of charge data from the electric vehicles, which can then be used to estimate vehicle health using data-driven prognostic algorithms developed by the team. Combined with the traffic congestion information obtained from external sources, such as HERE, this data can help create high-resolution energy consumption predictors, contextualized with features such as vehicle types and events in the city. These predictors can then be used by agencies like CARTA for operational optimization.

Overall, this project will enable the development and evaluation of tools to promote energy efficiency within a mobility-as-a-service transportation model in a mid-sized city. In addition to energy efficiency within each specific mode of operation, such as electric bus and electric car, this project will identify network mobility and energy efficiency associated with movement throughout the continuum of transportation choice present within Chattanooga. Further, the proposed project can complement the DoE national labs effort on vehicle energy consumption modeling by exploiting new data to investigate the impacts of road/driver factors on vehicle energy consumption. In addition, the project can supplement DoE national labs efforts by providing more data on electric bus operations under various driving conditions for model validation.

Towards High-Resolution Multi-Stage Security Games

Improving Network Connectivity and Robustness Using Trusted Nodes with Application to Resilient Consensus

Impact Factor: To tackle these challenges, decentralized solutions are needed, which can support the evolution of electrical power distribution systems. Transactive energy is a decentralized solution for dynamically balancing demand and supply, in which consumers, prosumers (i.e., consumers with energy storage or generation capabilities), providers, etc. can trade energy in an open market.

However, transactive energy solutions must also satisfy security, safety, and privacy requirements, which often seem to contradict each other. For example, to provide safety, detailed energy consumption and production information might need to be disseminated, but this threatens the privacy of prosumers. As another example, the complex and computationally expensive solutions required to provide security might not abide the real-time constraints of power systems.

In this project, we create a transactive energy system based on blockchain technology, using the distributed ledger provided by a blockchain to implement an energy trading platform. We develop protocols, smart contracts, middleware, and control algorithms to provide security, safety, and privacy for transactive energy.

Correct-by-Design Blockchain-based Smart Contracts

The adoption of blockchain based distributed ledgers is growing fast due to their ability to provide reliability, integrity, and auditability without trusted entities. One of the key capabilities of these emerging platforms is the ability to create self-enforcing smart contracts. However, the development of smart contracts has proven to be error-prone in practice, and as a result, contracts deployed on public platforms are often riddled with security vulnerabilities. This issue is exacerbated by the design of these platforms, which forbids updating contract code and rolling back malicious transactions. In light of this, it is crucial to ensure that a smart contract is secure before deploying it and trusting it with significant amounts of cryptocurrency.

This project introduces a framework for the formal verification of contracts that are specified using a transition-system based model with rigorous operational semantics. Our model-based approach allows developers to reason about and verify contract behavior at a high level of abstraction. Our framework allows the generation of smart-contract code from the verified models, which enables the correct-by-design development of smart contracts.

Monitoring Stealthy Diffusions

Improving Network Connectivity Using Trusted Nodes and Edges

Graph-Theoretic Approach for Increasing Participation in Social Sensing

Optimal Detection of Faulty Traffic Sensors Used in Route Planning

Scheduling Battery-Powered Sensor Networks for Minimizing Detection Delays

Synergic Security for Smart Water Networks: Redundancy, Diversity, and Hardening

A Game-Theoretic Approach for Alert Prioritization

Devising Effective Policies for Bug-Bounty Platforms and Security Vulnerability Discovery

Becoming Cybercriminals: Incentives in Networks with Interdependent Security

Optimal Thresholds for Anomaly-Based Intrusion Detection in Dynamical Environments

Banishing Misaligned Incentives for Validating Reports in Bug-Bounty Platforms

Acceptance Rate:
